Sedition Case Against Neha Singh Rathore: BJP’s Fear of Dissent Exposed

The Social Democratic Party of India strongly condemns the FIR filed against Bhojpuri folk singer Neha Singh Rathore. This politically driven act by the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government is a blatant attempt to silence dissent and stifle free speech.

Rathore’s X post on April 23 questioned the BJP’s use of the Pahalgam terror attack for political gain in the Bihar assembly elections, drawing parallels with the Pulwama incident of 2019. Her critique—deeply rooted in her advocacy for the marginalized—resonated with many who reject the politicization of national tragedies. Instead of addressing her concerns, the government has responded with intimidation, using sedition as a weapon against criticism.

This case is emblematic of the broader crackdown on free expression under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s rule. Journalists, activists, and artists have increasingly faced legal persecution for challenging the official narrative. Though some may hail it as “tough on anti-nationals,” it reflects a regime insecure about scrutiny and addicted to control.

By targeting a folk artist known for her socio-political voice, the BJP is not just attacking an individual—it’s attacking the democratic right to question and debate. The SDPI demands the immediate withdrawal of charges and urges the government to uphold free speech through dialogue, not repression.
