SDPI calls Muzaffarnagar riots cases’ judgments as travesty of justice
New Delhi 20 Jul 2019: The Social Democratic Party of India, SDPI, has termed the judgments in Muzaffarnagar riots wherein 40 out of 41 cases resulted in acquittals of accused in murder and rape cases as travesty of justice.
SDPI national general secretary Mohammad Shafi in a statement said that glaring gaps in prosecution resulted in five prosecution witnesses making a U-turn in court and six prosecution witnesses turning hostile. The police by commission or omission could not not produce murder weapons in court in five cases. The prosecution never cross-examined police on this grave direliction of duty. Thus, the whole process of justice was reduced to mockery as the accused walked free in the 40 in Muzaffarnagar riots cases.
Mr Shafi said since 2017, Muzaffarnagar courts have delivered verdicts in 41 cases linked to the riots — and delivered a conviction in just one case of murder. All the 40 acquittals have come in cases involving attacks on Muslims. The only conviction came on February 8, 2019, when the sessions court sentenced seven accused — Muzammil, Mujassim, Furqan, Nadeem, Jahangir, Afzal and Iqbal — to life in prison for the murder of cousins Gaurav and Sachin in Kawal village on August 27, 2013, the incident that is said to have triggered the riots. The statement continues: “the 53 men acquitted by the court alleged to have involved in murder arson and gang-rape but they were protected by BJP leaders
The acuittals exposes the collusion between the police and the rioters and have proved once again the weaker sections never get justice.
