Modi’s “Dimagi Naxal” Remark: An Attack on Dissent

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s branding of dissenting voices as “Dimagi Naxals” is deeply condemnable. Earlier, Modi branded dissenters as “Urban Naxals”. Now, he has expanded the rhetoric by targeting those who question his government, criticise its policies or challenge its narrative. By calling for such people to be “identified and isolated”, he is attempting to demonise dissent by associating legitimate disagreement with extremism.

In a democracy, criticism, protest and independent thought are not offences; they are essential expressions of constitutional freedom. Using an undefined label to stigmatise intellectuals, activists, students and political opponents undermines democratic debate and chills dissent. India needs accountability and dialogue, not demonisation and ideological policing.
