Biodiversity of the Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary Should be Preserved
The green signal given by the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) for exploratory oil and gas drilling in Assam’s Hollongapar Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary raises a lot of concerns about its ecological and environmental impact. The sanctuary is a crucial biodiversity haven, named after India’s sole ape species, the Hoolock gibbon and drilling activities in the area will harm the biodiversity and result in the extinction of Hoolock gibbon species.
Oil and gas are very crucial contributors to the economy of the nation, at the same time the preservation of biodiversity is highly significant to maintaining the ecological balance and preventing unpredicted natural calamities. So, the authorities should be very vigilant to ensure that the permitted drilling activities do not harm the biodiversity of the Sanctuary
