What Right or Power Does the Police Have to Interpret Law?

Adv. Sharfudheen Ahmad National Vice President

It would be good if some sane people in UP made the Moradabad Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Kumar Ran Vijay Singh aware that the police’s duty is to book the culprits with relevant sections of the law, not to judge the crime or interpret the law. In the mob lynching of the Muslim youth Shahedeen in Moradabad at the end of 2024, the ASP interpreted BNS and judged that the killing was not lynching. He says “Technical definition of lynching is if someone is killed over caste, creed, religion, but here the mob didn’t know his [Shahedeen’s] religion. So how can it be called lynching?”
