The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) expresses deep concern over the recent incidents during the Holi 2025 celebrations that have highlighted issues of bias within law enforcement, breaches of law and order, and the pressing need for unity between Hindu and Muslim communities.

Recent reports have raised alarms about the impartiality of our law enforcement agencies. Notably, the decision by authorities in Sambhal to cover mosques with tarpaulin sheets during Holi, insensitive remarks by officials, such as a UP police officer’s statement suggesting that Muslims should avoid stepping out during Holi if they are sensitive to colors, further exacerbate communal tensions. Such actions and statements undermine the principles of equality and justice that our democracy stands upon.

The festival of Holi, symbolizing unity and joy, has regrettably been marred by incidents targeting marginalized communities. The news reports have shed light on instances where celebrations have escalated to hooliganism, disproportionately affecting Muslim community. Furthermore, the media reports that in Madhya Pradesh, police were on high alert ahead of Holi amid violence in Mhow, indicate a broader pattern of unrest during the festivities. Such breach of law and order not only tarnishes the spirit of the festival but also threatens the harmonious fabric of our society.

In these challenging times, it is imperative for both Hindu and Muslim communities to come together in solidarity against the antisocial activities. Our shared history is rich with instances of mutual respect and unity. Let us draw strength from this legacy and reject any attempts to divide us along religious lines.

There is a growing need to be vigilant against divisive tactics employed by certain groups. Media reports on a BJP leader suggesting that Muslim men wear ‘tarpaulin hijabs’ during Holi, can be seen as a provocative statement . Additionally, another media report highlights remarks by a Bihar BJP MLA asking Muslims to stay indoors during Holi. Such narratives aim to create rifts within our society for political gains. It is our collective responsibility to recognize and challenge these strategies, ensuring that the secular and inclusive ethos of our nation remain intact.

The SDPI remains committed to advocating for justice, equality, and communal harmony. We urge all citizens to stand united against any form of discrimination and to work collectively towards a peaceful and inclusive India.
