OBC, SC/ST Reservation Being Foiled

The reservations for OBCs, SCs and STs appear to have been thwarted in faculty positions in the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) which are overwhelmingly dominated by people belonging to the General category.

Replies received individually from these institutions in September 2024, to Right to Information (RTI) requests filed by the national president of the All India OBC Students Association Gowd Kiran Kumar, reveal that more than 90% of faculty positions are held by those from the General category in at least two IITs and three IIMs. Additionally, in six IITs and four IIMs, the figure stands at 80-90%.This manipulation in faculty appointment needs to be read with the annual report of the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) for the years 2023-2024, which has omitted data on reservation in central government jobs and positions. In this report, a table containing details about all central government positions across ministries and departments, and the number of scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, and other backward classes employees across groups A, B, C, and D have been left out. The present government is deliberately denying opportunities to the socially and educationally backward sectors of society by foiling the reservation policy, and this should be strongly opposed.
