Madikeri, Nov 18: In the wake of shooting of Shahul Hameed on Tipu Jayanti, which was marred by the violent protests by Sangh Parivar activists in Madikeri, Social Democratic Party of India has urged the Karnataka government to seize rifles from Sangh Parivar activists.
Addressing media persons here SDPI State general secretary K H Abdul Majid said that Shahul Hameed was shot dead when he was returning from Tipu Jayanti programme. “There is a suspicion that the culprits have used the rifle by misusing the gun license issued by the government. Hence, the rifles possessed by all Sangh Parivar activists including BJP members should be seized,” Majid said.
He held Sangh Parivar, BJP MLAs K G Bopaiah, Appacchu Ranjan and MP Prathap Simha responsible for the untoward incidents. He said that it was the Sangh Parivar which called for a bandh opposing the Tipu Jayanti. The BJP and Sangh Parivar have been portraying the accidental death of a VHP leader as a murder and have lodged false cases on Muslim organisation leaders and CMC members from SDPI, he alleged and demanded a judicial probe into the incident.
The Sangh Parivar and BJP members have misused the gun licence issued by the government for Kodavas. Terming the murder of Shahul Hameed as a pre-planned incident, he sought the immediate arrest of the accused. Massive protestes will be staged in the district if the accused are not arrested, he warned. Protesters have assaulted the audience during Tipu Jayanti in Somwarpet and have destroyed the seats.
The DySP, who was present on the occasion, did not stop the incident and the failure of police is visible in this incident, he charged.
