Be Humane to the Rohingya Refugees
MK FaizyNational President
A research by US non-profit organisation reveals gross violations of constitutional and human rights against Rohingya refugees; and a failure by India to adhere to its commitments to international human rights treaties. Most Rohingya refugees are detained even after they have served their sentences. The violations also include disallowing spouses to be together, and forcefully separating older children from their parents in violation of India’s model detention code that states “families should not be separated”.The Indian government should act for lifesaving assistance and protection for displaced people on Rohingya refugees in India. SDPI supports the recommendations of the Azadi Project, the US non-profit organisation.1. Stop any further arbitrary detention of Rohingya refugees. Set up fast-track courts for clearing the long pending backlog of cases concerning arbitrary and indefinite detention of refugees.2. Unite Rohingya children forcibly separated from their parents and make provisions for families to live together with dignity, both inside and outside of detention.3. Align practices with international human rights standards and laws that India has signed or ratified, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), and the Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD. Also, align with UNHCR detention guidelines, which emphasize that indefinite detention is arbitrary and maximum limits on detention should be established in law.
