SDPI Demands CEC Resignation Over Alleged Electoral Irregularities in 2026 Assembly Polls
The Social Democratic Party of India has demanded the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, alleging serious failures in safeguarding the integrity and impartiality of the 2026 Assembly elections. The party expressed concern over developments in West Bengal, where the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise reportedly resulted in the deletion of nearly 90 lakh voter names ahead of the polls. The SDPI also referred to allegations regarding discrepancies in the serial numbers of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) before and after polling, stating that such claims have further intensified public distrust over the transparency and credibility of the electoral process.
The SDPI also criticised the transfer of senior administrative and police officials before polling, arguing that such actions raised serious concerns regarding institutional neutrality and the fairness of the electoral process. The party further stated that recent incidents of post poll violence escalating into riots in parts of West Bengal have raised serious questions over the intentions and effectiveness of the continued deployment of Central Armed Police Forces after the elections, despite earlier assurances regarding their presence to maintain order.
Referring to Assam, the party alleged that the election campaign was marked by communal polarisation and identity based rhetoric that deepened social divisions while sidelining issues of governance, welfare, and inclusive development.
The statement also addressed the political situation in Tamil Nadu, alleging that the Governor’s refusal to invite Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the government despite it emerging as the single largest party with 108 seats reflects a politically motivated approach that undermines democratic conventions. The SDPI maintained that denying the party an opportunity to prove its majority on the Assembly floor amounts to an attempt to influence the democratic process through constitutional office.
Calling for accountability and transparency, the party demanded a time bound and independent judicial inquiry into the electoral process in West Bengal, including voter list revisions, allegations related to EVM serial number discrepancies, administrative transfers, and the role of central agencies during and after polling. The SDPI stated that urgent corrective measures are necessary to restore public trust in democratic institutions and ensure that free and fair elections remain the cornerstone of the Indian republic.
