Adani Atomic Entry Exposes SHANTI Act’s True Face

The Social Democratic Party of India expresses grave alarm at the Adani Groups entry into the nuclear power sector via its new subsidiary Adani Atomic Energy Limited. P Abdul Majeed Faizy, National General Secretary condemns this development as the culmination of a carefully orchestrated plan enabled by the controversial SHANTI Act of 2025.

The timing reveals much. Adani announced its nuclear ambitions in November 2025. Within weeks, the government pushed through the Act, which dismantled long standing safeguards by allowing private ownership and operation of nuclear facilities, capping liabilities, and permitting 49 percent foreign investment. This has paved the way for Adani to target 30 gigawatts, effectively privatizing a sector built with public funds over decades.

We highlight the dangers inherent in these changes. By removing supplier liability and imposing weak operator caps, the Act exposes millions to unacceptable risks in a densely populated country. It also undermines national sovereignty by inviting foreign control over critical energy infrastructure. Such provisions were clearly designed to benefit corporate allies at the expense of public safety and strategic autonomy.

This blatant favoritism erodes trust in governance and prioritizes profit over people. The SDPI demands the immediate scrapping of the SHANTI Act, a full parliamentary inquiry into its rushed passage, and a halt to all private nuclear initiatives. India must reclaim its energy future for the benefit of its citizens, not a handful of conglomerates.
