The National Representative Council of the Social Democratic Party of India was held on 20 and 21 January 2026 at the Indiana Convention Centre, Mangalore. Representatives from all states across India participated in the two day national council, reflecting the party’s expanding organisational presence and national character.

The council commenced with the hoisting of the party flag by National Vice President Mohammad Shafi, followed by the formal inauguration of the proceedings. National General Secretary Muhammed Ashraf served as the Director of the programme, while National General Secretary Sitaram Khoiwal welcomed the leaders and representatives attending the council.

National Vice President Mohammad Shafi delivered the presidential address, outlining the political situation of the country, the deepening democratic crisis and the responsibilities of the party in defending constitutional values. National General Secretaries Muhammed Elyas Thumbe, Sitaram Khoiwal, Yasmin Farooqui and P Abdul Majeed Faizy presented the Term Working Report before the council. The Political Report was presented by National General Secretary Muhammed Elyas Thumbe. After detailed deliberations, both the reports were unanimously adopted by the council.

The National Representative Council held extensive discussions on the prevailing political developments in the country, including rising authoritarianism, erosion of federalism, communal polarisation, misuse of investigative agencies and the future political and organisational course of the party.
The council then proceeded with the election of the new National Working Committee. The election process was conducted under the supervision of the Returning Officers Maulana Obaidullah Khan Azmi, former Member of Parliament and Vice President of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, and Advocate K P Muhammed Shareef. Following democratic deliberations, a forty five member National Working Committee was elected.

The newly elected National Working Committee convened immediately thereafter and elected the incarcerated leader M K Faizy once again as the National President of the Social Democratic Party of India, reaffirming the party’s collective resistance to political vendetta and its unwavering commitment to democratic principles. Mohammad Shafi has been elected as the Acting President. Muhammed Dehlan Baqavi and Sitaram Khoiwal were elected as National Vice Presidents. The council elected Muhammed Ashraf Ankajal, Riyaz Farangipete, P Abdul Majeed Faizy, Yasmin Farooqui and Muhammed Elyas Thumbe as National General Secretaries, while Alphonse Franko, Ya Mohideen, Sadiya Saeeda, Advocate Sardar D S Bindra, Athika Sajid and Tayeedul Islam were elected as National Secretaries. Abdul Sathar was elected as the National Treasurer.

The National Working Committee further comprised members drawn from various states including Abdul Hannan, Abdul Latheef C P, Abdul Majeed Mysore, Abdul Mueed Hashmi, Ajmal Ismail, Ashfaque Hussain, Muvatthupuzha Ashraf Moulavi, Hafiz Ataullah Khan, Advocate Azhar Tamboli, Hakikul Islam, Advocate H Khalida, Dr Mehboob Shareef, Nellai Mubarak, Muhammed Hanzala Sheikh, Nizamuddin Khan, Rasheed Umari N K, D Ravi Chandran, Runa Laila, S K Biswas, Sadashiv Tripaty, Saheer Abbas, Dr Sarwar Ali, Shahnawaz Ahmed Qadri, Advocate Sharfuddin Ahmad, Advocate Shiba Minai, Thulaseedharan Pallikkal, Uvesh Abdul Rashid Shaikh, Advocate Vidayaraj Malvya and Yasmin Islam, ensuring broad regional representation and organisational diversity.

The newly elected National Working Committee also constituted the National Secretariat of the party. The National Secretariat includes National President M K Faizy, National Vice Presidents Mohammad Shafi, Shaik Muhammed Dehlan Baqavi and Sitaram Khoiwal, National General Secretaries Muhammed Ashraf, Riyaz Farangipete, P Abdul Majeed Faizy, Yasmin Farooqui and Muhammed Elyas Thumbe, along with Ya Mohideen, Tayeedul Islam, Sadiya Saeeda, Alphonse Franko, Abdul Sathar and Rasheed Umari N K.

The National Representative Council also marked a historic milestone by launching the party’s youth wing, Young Democrats, for the first time in the seventeen year history of the Social Democratic Party of India. The council affirmed that the youth wing aims to mobilise young people across the country in defence of democratic politics, social justice and constitutional values. An Organising Committee consisting of twenty one members representing various states of India was elected, and Advocate Renu Singh from Uttar Pradesh was elected and announced as the National Convenor of Young Democrats.

The National Representative Council adopted eighteen resolutions addressing key national and international issues. These include condemnation of the arrest of National President M K Faizy and the political misuse of investigative agencies, demand for immediate repeal of the SIR process, repeal or radical amendment of the UAPA, release of long term undertrial prisoners, protection and empowerment of minority communities, conduct of a comprehensive caste census, legal guarantee of minimum support price for farmers, protection of the Places of Worship Act, defence of federalism and the plural idea of India, establishment of a statutory Equal Opportunity Commission, electoral reforms including proportional representation, permanent delimitation based strictly on population, resistance to authoritarian and majoritarian rule, opposition to misuse of preventive detention laws, prioritisation of employment generation and rural development, urgent science based action on climate change and India’s support for a just two state solution for Palestine.

The council concluded with a renewed resolve to strengthen democratic struggles, expand organisational reach and intensify political intervention in defence of constitutional values, social justice and secular democracy.
