SDPI Slams US for Backing Israel’s Ban on UNRWA in Gaza

The Social Democratic Party of India strongly condemns the United States’ defense of Israel’s ban on UNRWA operations in Gaza, as articulated at the International Court of Justice on April 30, 2025. By claiming Israel has no obligation to cooperate with UNRWA, the US endorses a 60-day blockade that has plunged Gaza into a humanitarian catastrophe, with famine looming and 3,000 aid trucks stalled. This stance violates the Fourth Geneva Convention, which mandates unimpeded humanitarian aid, and dismisses UNRWA’s critical role in supporting 5.9 million Palestinian refugees.

The US reliance on unproven allegations of UNRWA’s ties to Hamas, without demanding evidence, undermines international law and emboldens Israel to obstruct life-saving aid. Suggesting other agencies can replace UNRWA ignores its unmatched infrastructure, serving 1.2 million people with food and education. The US position not only prolongs Palestinian suffering but also erodes the credibility of global humanitarian institutions, setting a dangerous precedent for bypassing UN mandates under vague security pretexts.

We urge the US to reverse its stance, pressure Israel to lift the blockade, and uphold UNRWA’s mandate. The Social Democratic Party of India stands in solidarity with the Palestinian people and calls for immediate, unconditional access to humanitarian aid in Gaza. The US must prioritize human rights over political alliances and support a just resolution to this crisis.
