The Social Democratic Party of India strongly condemns the outrageous and inflammatory remarks made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey against the Supreme Court of India and Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna. Accusing the judiciary of “making laws” and holding the CJI responsible for “all civil wars” in the country is not only a direct assault on the independence of the judiciary but also a dangerous attempt to undermine one of the strongest pillars of our democracy. Such reckless statements, particularly targeting the Supreme Court’s scrutiny of the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, reveal a sinister intent to polarize communities and erode public trust in constitutional institutions. The SDPI stands firmly with the judiciary in its role as a guardian of justice and equality, and we demand that Mr. Dubey issue an immediate apology for his baseless and divisive rhetoric.

The BJP’s attempt to distance itself from Dubey’s remarks through a statement by party president J.P. Nadda is wholly inadequate and reeks of political opportunism. The party’s selective disavowal, while allowing similar sentiments to be echoed by other leaders like Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, exposes a pattern of tacit support for attacks on judicial authority when it suits their agenda. The Waqf Act amendments, which the Supreme Court is rightfully examining for their constitutionality, have already sparked concerns among minority communities for their discriminatory provisions. Dubey’s remarks, accusing the judiciary of inciting “religious wars,” are a calculated move to inflame communal tensions and deflect from the government’s failures. The SDPI calls for strict legal action against Dubey under the Contempt of Courts Act, as his statements, made outside Parliament, constitute a grave affront to judicial dignity.

We urge all democratic forces, civil society, and citizens to unite in defending the sanctity of the Supreme Court and its role in upholding constitutional values. The SDPI reiterates its commitment to fostering harmony, justice, and equality, and we will not stand idly by as divisive forces attempt to destabilize our nation’s democratic framework. The judiciary must be allowed to function without fear or intimidation, and any attempt to vilify it for political gain must be met with the strongest resistance. We call upon the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognizance of this matter and ensure that such attacks on its authority are met with exemplary consequences. The SDPI will continue to advocate for the rights of all communities and the preservation of India’s pluralistic ethos against those who seek to divide us.
