The Social Democratic Party of India, (SDPI), while expressing deep dismay at the scourge of corruption which has engulfed the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre, the latest being Union Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal nephew’s alleged involvement in bribery case, has demanded his resignation.

SDPI national president A. Sayeed in a statement said that the Congress has become synonymous with corruption. The unfolding of mega scams including coal block allocation, 2G Spectrum and others has not created any kind of difference in the attitude of the corruption-ridden UPA government and its leaders. It remains to be seen how the government will control corruption with anti-corruption bill lying in limbo, he added.

The statement stated that the revolutionary Congress has now become the corrupt Congress. The UPA government at the Centre apparently appears to be only involved in corruption and shielding the corrupt elements. It has tarnished the image of the country with its involvement in several scams and it has no right to rule the country, the statement added. Contention of the party, that the Karnataka Mandate will prove its innocence, is only a mockery and a challenge against people. Congress is trying to hold on the haystack.

Sayeed said that the Congress has double standards when it saves its own ministers indulging in corruption while its allies’ ministers are not spared. The marching orders to A. Raja and Kalanidhi Maran are clear examples to explain the double yardstick of the Congress. To rebut the charge of double standards the Congress should ask Bansal to step down, he stated.
