Prudence and Sense of Justice have not Vanished

Mohammad Shafi

National Vice President

Though isolated, it is solace that there still exist voices of prudence and justice in the communally contaminated Indian socio-political milieu. Adv. Dushyant Dave and Hon’ble former Supreme Court justice Rohinton Nariman stand out among the lawyers and judicial officers aligned with hate politics. Hon’ble former justice Nariman has expressed his unequivocal view and opinion that the lawsuits targeting mosques and dargahs are eroding India’s secular foundation. During his inaugural lecture at Justice A.M. Ahmadi Foundation, he termed these cases as “Hydra heads popping up all over the country,” threatening communal harmony. He cautioned that these suits could lead to “communal tension and disharmony, contrary to what is envisaged in both our constitution and in the Places of Worship Act.” He also underlined the need to follow the Places of Worship Act 1991 for peace and harmony in the country. He concluded his speech by quoting Justice Chinnappa Reddy: “Our tradition teaches tolerance; our philosophy preaches tolerance; our Constitution practices tolerance; let us not dilute it.”SDPI sincerely appreciates the stand of Hon’ble Nariman.
