No Closure Without Truth: SDPI Demands Reopening of Najeeb Ahmed Case Amid CBI Failures

With profound sorrow, the Social Democratic Party of India addresses the Rouse Avenue Court’s decision on June 30, 2025, to accept the CBI’s closure report in the disappearance of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, prolonging a family’s agony and denying them truth. The SDPI demands the urgent reopening of this case, as the CBI’s evident failures obstruct justice for a young scholar, urging immediate action to uncover the facts.

Najeeb Ahmed, a 27-year-old M.Sc. student at JNU, vanished on October 15, 2016, after a violent assault by ABVP-affiliated students, confirmed by witnesses. The CBI’s investigation has been woefully inadequate, failing to rigorously question nine suspects, pursue polygraph testing due to their non-cooperation, or thoroughly analyze call data records. The agency’s baseless claims of Najeeb’s mental health issues or departure from India lack evidence, eroding trust in its mandate.

Fatima Nafees, Najeeb’s mother, has endured nearly nine years of unrelenting pain, bravely refuting the CBI’s false narratives, including insinuations of her son’s ties to terrorism. These tactics expose systemic biases against marginalized communities, particularly Muslims, who face targeted injustices. The CBI’s claim of a “comprehensive investigation” is indefensible, ignoring the assault’s political context and inconsistencies in witness accounts.

The Social Democratic Party of India stands firmly with Fatima Nafees’s fight for justice, which reflects every citizen’s right to truth and equality. The SDPI calls for an independent review of the CBI’s investigative lapses to ensure accountability, a thorough re-examination of suspects under judicial oversight to pursue all leads, and the use of advanced forensic methods to analyze evidence for new insights. The court’s provision to reopen the case must be acted upon swiftly to deliver justice for Najeeb.
