‘You can’t come with a bulldozer and demolish the house overnight,” warned the Supreme Court terming it “lawlessness” and ordered the UP government to pay a compensation of Rs. 25 lakhs to a victim whose house was razed in 2019.In a similar verdict, the Gauhati High Court too had ordered to pay Rs 32.5 lakh in compensation to the victims of an “illegal act” of demolition, commenting that demolishing houses “in guise of investigation” was not provided in any criminal law.
Let’s hope that the punitive interventions of the judiciary will bring a fullstop to the ultra vires bulldozer rule of the BJP chief ministers Aditya Nath and Himanta Sharma.
