It is unlikely that the upper castes and hence the rulers in the country will be worried the least by the finding that the key factor behind child stunting in India is caste disparities. The study by economists Ashwini Deshpande and Rajesh Ramachandran, published by the Journal of Economics, Race and Policy found that children from historically marginalised communities such as Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes were 50% more likely to be stunted than those from upper castes.
