SDPI Congratulates Jamia Students on Their Historic Victory; Salutes Their Uncompromising Struggle for Democratic Rights
The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) heartily congratulates the students of Jamia Millia Islamia on their historic victory in the struggle for the restoration of the Jamia Students’ Union. The successful conclusion of the 18-day hunger strike and indefinite sit-in, culminating in the university administration’s acceptance of the students’ major demands, marks a significant milestone in the history of student movements and democratic struggles in the country.
SDPI salutes the courage, determination, unity and uncompromising spirit of the students who stood firm despite mounting pressure, the deteriorating health of hunger strikers and repeated challenges. This victory is the outcome of their sustained collective struggle, unwavering commitment and refusal to compromise on their legitimate democratic demands. The students have once again demonstrated that organised, peaceful and determined resistance, backed by solidarity and collective action, can secure democratic rights. The participation and unity of students across different organisations and ideological backgrounds have further strengthened this struggle.
Jamia Millia Islamia carries a remarkable legacy of resistance, deeply rooted in India’s freedom struggle and the Khilafat Movement. Founded in 1920 by a group of eminent nationalists and freedom fighters, including Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar, Hakim Ajmal Khan, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad Ansari and Dr. Zakir Husain, Jamia emerged from the spirit of anti-colonial resistance, educational emancipation and national unity. Its historical legacy represents the values of freedom, secularism, equality and social transformation. From its significant participation in the anti-CAA movement to the recent struggle for the restoration of its Students’ Union, Jamia has continued to uphold this tradition of resistance and democratic assertion. Its students have repeatedly demonstrated that a university is not merely an institution of academic learning but also a space for critical thought, constitutional values and the defence of democratic rights.
SDPI expresses its hope that the students of Jamia will continue to carry forward the revolutionary spirit, progressive ideals and intellectual legacy of its founders. The legacy of Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar and other founding figures must continue to inspire generations committed to justice, equality, fraternity, secularism and egalitarianism. Jamia must remain a centre of critical thinking, democratic consciousness and social transformation, nurturing young minds committed to building an inclusive and equitable society.
This victory is not merely about the restoration of a Students’ Union; it is also a powerful reminder that democratic institutions must remain accountable to the people they represent. Once again, Jamia has shown the country how the struggle for democracy, secularism, social justice, equality and egalitarianism can be pursued through unity, collective action and an uncompromising commitment to constitutional rights. SDPI hopes that this achievement will inspire students across universities to raise their voices for democratic representation, social justice, equal opportunities, academic freedom and an inclusive educational environment.
Long Live Student Unity!
Long Live Democracy, Secularism, Social Justice and Egalitarianism!
