Malegaon Blast Verdict Raises Alarming Questions on Role of Agencies, SDPI Demands Reinvestigation
The discharge of all accused in the 2006 Malegaon blast case by the Bombay High Court is a deeply disturbing moment for the justice system of our country. Nearly two decades after a brutal terror attack that claimed innocent lives, the complete collapse of prosecution reflects not just a legal failure but also serious allegations regarding the communal intentions of extremist elements within the Hindu right wing that had emerged during the course of the investigation. The initial targeting of innocent Muslim youth without credible evidence, followed by the later exposure of alleged involvement of members linked to Abhinav Bharat, shows how the case revealed disturbing dimensions of ideologically driven violence before ultimately collapsing without accountability.
It is important to recall the role of Hemant Karkare, whose investigation brought to light the real nature of the conspiracy and challenged earlier biased narratives. Equally concerning are the revelations made by former special public prosecutor Rohini Salian, who publicly stated that she was pressured to go soft in cases involving right wing accused after a change in regime. Such testimony raises serious questions about whether the National Investigation Agency functioned independently or whether its approach was influenced in a manner that weakened the case, diluted evidence, and ultimately contributed to the collapse of prosecution.
This outcome cannot be separated from the broader political context, where repeated concerns have been raised about the influence of the ruling regime on investigative processes in sensitive cases. The dilution of charges, disappearance of crucial evidence, and shifting prosecutorial positions point towards a pattern that demands urgent scrutiny. The victims of Malegaon deserve justice, not silence and institutional failure. The Social Democratic Party of India strongly demands a time bound, independent reinvestigation under judicial supervision to uncover the full truth and ensure that all those responsible, irrespective of ideology or political backing, are identified and punished in accordance with the law.
