SDPI Welcomes Rising Global Recognition of Palestine’s Sovereignty

Mohammad Shafi, National Vice President of the Social Democratic Party of India, welcomes the growing international consensus in favor of recognizing the sovereign State of Palestine. It is encouraging that, as of September 2025, 151 United Nations member states—representing more than 78% of the global community—have formally recognized Palestine’s sovereignty. This surge in support, particularly since 2024 in the backdrop of the continuing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, reflects a decisive shift in global diplomacy towards justice, human rights, and the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.

The latest recognitions by the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal on September 21, 2025, add to earlier moves by Ireland, Norway, Spain, and several others. Together, these actions reaffirm the global rejection of prolonged occupation and reinforce the commitment to a two-state solution, based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine. These developments, motivated by humanitarian imperatives and multilateral resolve, stand in sharp contrast to the persistent vetoes and obstruction by a handful of powerful nations, particularly the United States, which continue to deny Palestine full membership in the United Nations.

The SDPI has consistently upheld the Palestinian cause and urged India to take a proactive stand. India’s long tradition of anti-colonial solidarity and support for oppressed peoples demands nothing less than immediate recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state. Such recognition would not only reflect India’s foundational principles of peace and justice but also strengthen international efforts to resolve this longstanding conflict through dialogue, diplomacy, and adherence to international law.
