SDPI Denounces Uttar Pradesh Government’s Targeted Demolition of Muslim Institutions
Social Democratic Party of India vehemently condemns the Uttar Pradesh government’s discriminatory campaign demolishing over 225 madrassas, 30 mosques, 25 mazars, and 6 Eidgahs along the Indo-Nepal border in districts such as Shravasti (110 madrassas), Siddharthnagar (9 mosques), and Maharajganj (29 madrassas). Under the pretext of addressing “illegal encroachments” and enhancing security, this campaign disproportionately targets Muslim religious and educational institutions, revealing a clear communal bias.
The so-called “bulldozer justice” under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath violates constitutional protections under Articles 25 and 30, which safeguard religious freedom and minority educational rights. Many demolitions have proceeded with inadequate notice, displacing students and families without recourse. The timing, amid India-Pakistan tensions, suggests a calculated move to polarize communities for political gain, eroding India’s pluralistic ethos.
The SDPI demands an immediate halt to these demolitions, a transparent judicial inquiry into violations of due process, full rehabilitation and compensation for affected communities, and meaningful dialogue with Muslim leaders to address grievances and rebuild trust. We stand in solidarity with the victims of this injustice and call on all secular forces to join us in defending India’s constitutional values against this state-sponsored marginalization.
