SDPI Condemns the Arrests of Political Leaders in Kolkata

The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) strongly condemns the oppressive action of the West Bengal government in arresting leaders of various political parties, including SDPI state president Haqiqul Islam, during their protest in Kolkata against the ill-intentioned SIR by the Election Commission of India.

It is surprising that the TMC government of West Bengal, itself a victim of suppression by the Union BJP regime, has forcefully stopped a peaceful agitation in which several parties participated, including the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the Indian Secular Front (ISF), Women India Movement, Welfare Party of India, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), the Azad Samaj Party, and the Minority Youth Federation.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee must answer why she has resorted to such a vindictive action against peaceful agitators. Her decision is nothing but a denial of the constitutional rights and freedoms guaranteed to every Indian citizen. This authoritarian step by the WB government mirrors the tyrannical rule of the Union BJP regime.
