Assam CM Should Resign for Spreading Hate and Division
Yasmin Farooqui, National General Secretary of the Social Democratic Party of India, calls for the immediate resignation of Himanta Biswa Sarma from the post of Chief Minister of Assam, citing his divisive and dangerous policies that undermine communal harmony and constitutional values. His recent announcement to issue gun licenses exclusively to “indigenous” residents starting August 1, 2025, along with his provocative warning of an “explosive situation” in Assam, poses a serious threat to peace and democracy.
Sarma’s policies, including selective arming and eviction drives disproportionately targeting Bengali-origin Muslims, are deeply discriminatory and appear designed to incite communal unrest. Evictions in Gorukhuti (2021), Dhubri, and Goalpara (2025) have displaced thousands—many with legal land claims—and were accompanied by state violence and civilian casualties. His repeated labeling of Bengali-speaking Muslims as “infiltrators” and “suspected Bangladeshis” reflects a deliberate strategy to marginalize and vilify a vulnerable minority.
His tenure has been marred by inflammatory rhetoric and governance failures. Remarks such as calling Congress a “male cow,” mocking the Miya Muslim community, and referencing “Hussain Obama” have drawn national criticism for promoting hate. Despite decades in power, his administration has failed to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord and ignored the Haricharan Brahma Committee’s recommendations on land rights—exposing the emptiness of his claims to protect indigenous interests. Furthermore, allegations of large-scale corruption and land grabs raised by the opposition demand urgent accountability.
SDPI asserts that Sarma’s continued presence as Chief Minister endangers Assam’s unity, peace, and democratic ethos. We urge Himanta Biswa Sarma to resign immediately from office. An independent, court-monitored investigation into the eviction drives must be launched. The proposed arms licensing scheme must be scrapped to prevent further polarization. The state must ensure immediate rehabilitation, fair compensation, and legal land restoration for all displaced families.
