Peoples’ unfulfilled desire for a better life tends to create a volatile situation in the country. All this is fueling protests and struggles in the country. We are thus witnessing growing peoples’ struggles on various issues related to denied rights, public welfare and safety. The struggles for protection of natural resources by fishermen, landless workers, Dalits, tribals, rural folks and urban poor are on the increase despite measures to repress them. The governments are however eager to hand over the natural resources to corporations and private hands including foreign multinational corporations. No part of the country has been untouched by people’s struggle including Koodamkulam, Narmada, Tehri, Damodar, Singur, Nandigram, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, mining areas of Central India, Mumbai, Patna, Delhi, Bangalore and other urban settlements.

There is essential similarity between all ruling class parties on most core policy matters and behaviors, whether it is economic reforms or foreign policy or the secularism and communalism. They would however fight against each other to capture power. Now among political parties, corruption is no more an absolute evil but only a relative campaign issue. The governments and major political parties that constitute the rulings class are characterized by attitudes and trends that are detrimental to the re-building of our nation as a Welfare State. The reactionary approaches that engulf our ruling class are taking our nation from bad to worse in all fronts. We are being taken away from the long cherished national values to a chaotic situation as summarized below:

From Equity  To Injustice
From Socialism  To Capitalism
From Democracy  To Corruption
From Secularism  To Communalism
From Welfare State  To Security State

Freedom is our birth right. As citizens of a democratic country it is our constitutional guarantee also. “Freedom from Hunger; Freedom from Fear” – The slogan raised by Social Democratic Party of India carries the hopes and aspirations all suffering sections of the Indian society. Agitations as well as Elections are the tools adopted by the party to attain Freedom from Hunger, Freedom from Fear; to fulfill Social Democracy; and to make India a Welfare State.
