Mumbai, 01 Feb 2016: The Social Democratic Party of India-SDPI Mumbai District unit, under the banner of JAC (Joint Action Committee) a forum of several socio-political organizations, held a protest march from Byculla to Vidhan Bhavan demanding justice for the deceased Dalit scholar Rohit Vemula. The Dalit student who was forced to end his life by the apartheid exercised collectively by the Hyderabad University Administration, Union Minister Dattatreya and the Ministry of HRD, headed by the BJP leader Smriti Irani.

Rohit Vemula and four other Dalit students were not allowed to enter hostel or library, they were completely banned for no crime. Believably the Dalit scholar who ended his life had to pay for raising voice against injustice meted out to the minority community. It is high time that the society embraces Dalits as its own brethren and shun the idea of discrimination laid down by Manu Smriti, said Amjad Shaikh, President Mumbai District.
The Party has held nationwide demonstrations terming the death as institutional death and not suicide. A delegation too had paid a visit to the University Campus recently extending its solidarity with the Ambedkar Students Association-ASA and the Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed seeking justice for Rohit Vemula. The party leaders also visited the deceased family expressing condolence.
